Annalien started piano at 7. Her teachers have included Hannalie and Theresa de Villiers, Adolph Hallis and Marian Friedman, under whom she obtained her BMus, BMus(Hons) and MMus in Performing Arts (cum laude) at the University of Pretoria. She also holds Performers Licentiates in piano and chamber music from UNISA. In 1998 she received master classes from Peter Feuchtwanger in London.
Annalien was Category winner in the Forte Competition (1986) and awarded Pretorium Trust bursaries (1987-89), FAK study bursaries (1988-89) and the post graduate Pretorium Trust bursary (1991). She has appeared as soloist with a number of local orchestras, and as a member of the Allegri Piano Trio in Grahamstown and with the Cape Philharmonic.
Annalien has recorded (radio) with the Allegri violinist Johanna Roos, flautist Petro von Wielligh, clarinetist Lizet Smith and made a CD of Niel van der Watt compositions. In 2001 she participated in the Internationale Stichting Masterclass Apeldoorn in Holland with the Aulos Trio. Since 2002 she has given recitals with French violinist Philippe Graffin on his visits to South Africa.
In 2004 Annalien performed with Lizet Smith at the Gratchenfestival in Amsterdam. In 2004 they formed the Chamuleau Trio with cellist Susan Mouton. Annalien, Susan and Miroslav Chakaryan perform as the Trio con Brio. Annalien is also the pianist of Trio Gloriosa. Annalien is employed by the University of Pretoria as an accompanist.
